Hopeful Ever After #012

August 2025

Hopeful Followers,

A friend of mine told me after my husband died to embrace the grief. I quickly replied, “the grief has embraced me”. I am giving you some thoughts that I copied which I thought all of us can relate to. Please enjoy the rest of your summer.

Sending Hugs,

Carolyn

Grief:

At first, it fills every aspect of your life, leaving no space for anything else. But slowly, you begin to grow around it. Grief does not vanish, it remains, a part of you, but your life expands to hold both the sorrow and the possibility of joy again. You are not who you were before the loss; you are someone new, carrying the weight of love in a different form. Grief changes your heart, your priorities, and the way you see the world, not by erasing the pain, but by teaching you how to live alongside it…

This Month’s Financial Tip

TIP: Ask your advisor what their advisory fees are. Keep in mind there are internal expenses that we will discuss next time. Please reach out if you want to understand your investment fees.

Last month we began discussing fees that you may be charged. We discussed Financial Planning fees in July.

In August, we will discuss advisory fees.

I have a client Tessa. She has a portfolio worth $550,000. We have customized her account that is in her IRA so she has a mix of stocks, bonds, and cash that meets her risk tolerance and income needs.
Our advisory fee for her is 1%/year.
This translates to $5500/year if the portfolio stays at the above number. If it declines due to market conditions or withdrawals, our fee declines. If her account increases, our fee increases. We monitor her portfolio, we provide financial planning that she may need periodically- that is included in that fee, and any changes that are needed are included in the fee.
Tessa did not want to manage her account herself. She wanted professional advice in hopes that she would not run out of money. There is no standard on fees charged by advisors. We do a flat fee back to the first dollar.
Some advisors have graduated fees. For example, they charge a fee for the 1 st $500,000, then a different fee for the next $500,000, etc.bonds, and cash that meets her risk tolerance and income needs.

Books Worth Reading

I am currently reading Widder’s Landing by Eric Price (KY author-former history teacher). This is a historical novel based on what frontier life in KY was like in the early 1800’s. Widder was the pronunciation of widow on the frontier and how they survived.

It's a long book that I cannot put down. Enjoy!

This Month’s Recipe

Tomatoes and Burrata

Heirloom tomatoes (they have the best flavor)- 2-3 slices per serving

Burrata Cheese – it is in the dairy case – my favorite is Trader Joe’s

I use ½ of the cheese per serving on 2-3 slices of the tomatoes.

Drizzle of olive oil on each serving

Drizzle of Balsamic Glaze on each serving

¼ cup of arugula scattered on top

This is known as a composed salad – it makes for a wonderful starter for a meal or a lite lunch served with crunchy French bread.
